A red fox has a number of vocalizations but the one that always sends chills down my spine is the one it uses when trying to spook prey into making a run for it. It’s particularly chilling when it is nearby and I know that Psycho is the prey. Play that clip three times in quick succession with the volume all the way up and you’ll hear what woke Champ and me at 5 AM. Champ raced down the stairs barking. I was close behind. (One of these days I’m going to kill myself running down those uncarpeted stairs in the dark.) I flipped the switch for the floodlights out back and saw the fox standing in the middle of the yard. It was staring at Psycho who was on the deck. After a few seconds it turned and nonchalantly made its way to the back of the yard and disappeared around the fence that separates my yard from Lisa’s. When I opened the back door a shaken Psycho ran inside.
I’d love it if I could get Psycho to stay in at night but that’s never going to happen. He’s almost 7-years old and he’s not about to change his ways, fox or no fox. Unless it’s near freezing or below, he wants to spend his nights outside. If I try to keep him in he makes such a racket that either Justine or I have to get up and let him out. Even after he got the wits scared out of him this morning he wanted to go back out minutes after running inside, although he was smart enough to stay on the deck until sunrise.
I’m now fairly sure I know what happened to the rabbit that liked to torture Champ. Shortly after I wrote about it I found a large pile of bunny fur in the back yard. Champ and I haven’t seen the rabbit since then.
BTW, the clip of the fox crying is so realistic that every time I play it Champ barks and runs to the living room window that looks out onto the back yard. It’s almost as much fun as the laser pointer.
Update: For some reason the Angelfire clip is no longer there. I'll try to find another one.
The fox didn't come back last night.
