Ms. Hilda
I have the greatest neighbor anyone could ask for. Hilda Jefferson is a Charleston icon. She served on City Council for 22 years and has been a spokesperson for the black community for longer than that. Even though she's 80-something, she has more energy than I have.
She looks out for me, and I look out for her. If my truck is missing for more than a day, she phones to see where I am (once she caught me in a NYC cab.). I panic if I see her paper sitting on the lawn past noon.
We all need friends like Ms. Hilda.
She caught me taking this hipshot, but I couldn't resist.
