Over the years I've tried several different types of veggie burgers made by several different companies and I wasn't impressed by any of them. At least, not impressed enough to buy any of them a second time. A couple of months ago I came across two new kinds at my grocery, Morningstar Farms® Grillers Prime™ veggie burgers and Boca® All-American Flame Grilled veggie burgers, and I thought I'd give them a try. While neither tastes exactly like a burger hot off the grill, they're pretty damn close. They are easy to cook, too. A minute and a half in the microwave (and an extra 10 sec if you want to melt a slice of fat-free cheese over your burger.)
I like my burgers on a bun with fixin's, so in keeping with my new improved eating habits, I went looking for whole wheat buns. Somebody may bake them, but all I could find were "wheat" buns that are essentially white buns with enough whole wheat tossed in to make them look wholesome. Scouring the bread shelves in several stores I found something just as good - Sara Lee® Delightful 100% Whole Wheat Bagels. They sound like they should be the bakery equivalent of curling stones, but in fact they are quite light.
I split a bagel, spread on some brown mustard, and cover the holes in the bagel halves with lettuce. I nuke the burger, add cheese, and nuke briefly again. Once the burger is on the bun, I add pickles, tomatoes, and onion. The result not only tastes great, but it's good for me. How can that be? LOL!
Ignoring the insignificant contribution from the fixin's, the Boca® burger, bagel, and cheese stack up this way:
Calories 240
Cholesterol 0 g
Fat: 4.5 g (1 g sat, 0 g trans)
Carb: 17 g net (29 g carb - 11 g fiber)
Protein: 29 g
[Note: The Boca® burger has a little less fat, and more fiber, than the other brand.]
So, without further ado, here's my bagel veggie cheeseburger.

Oh that looks great! :) I'll have to look for those in our stores.

Looks great....uhhh sounds awful. Sorry, but the real thing without a bun...will always rule. "laura's Lean Beef" which is around here is very low in fat and tastes great. Also you might check out Pepperidge Farm's Carb-Style breads/rolls "new" and Aunt Millie's Carb Watcher Breads. We use 'em and they taste great. Do you remember the little boy on some commercial where the kids shout "It's okay... Mikey will eat anything"...as they try something new. You wouldn't have been that boy would ya???

I'll just hang my head in shame for what I was just doing while I talked on the phone with Melissa. It looks great Mike and thank you very much for sharing with us.

Mike, that looks great! Looks like it would be good for both low-carbers and low-fatters alike. Thanks for sharing the new products with us...I'm definitely going to try them.

Mike,
It looks great, but I just don't know about a bagel for a bun -- too hard for my taste. And I'm of the belief that a real burger every once in a while won't kill you and has got to taste better.
I like the black bean burgers/patties that are available at the grocery store only I don't try to make them into a hamburger. I just nuke a few and put a dollop of low-fat sour cream and some salsa on top -- no bread. It tastes pretty good!
